New discoveries at the temple of Hera at Olympia
Philip Sapirstein University of Nebraska–Lincoln
Résumé
Since 2013, the Digital Architecture Project has opened a new investigation of the (so-called) Heraion at Olympia. I will speak about two major new results from the research. First, I make the case that the temple was designed and constructed with stone colonnades, which better accounts for the surviving remains than the longstanding theory that the peristyle was originally wooden. Second, I will discuss a digital anastylosis of the colonnades, using a computer algorithm to restore more than 60 fallen drums and 21 capitals to their original positions. I consider the repercussions to our understanding of the construction history of the Heraion, and its broader impact on emerging Doric architecture.
