On trade diasporas and mercantile communities: a reassessment from the Greek perspective (18th-19th centuries)

While recent trends in diaspora studies reflect a fragmentation of this field of study into a number of increasingly autonomous subfields, the very ambition of building an integrated theory of diaspora seems to have become more and more elusive. Yet, the notion remains crucial to our understanding not only of a variety of migration patterns both past and present, but also of a number of topical issues linked to mobility, ranging – in the Greek case at least – from identity and social structure, to entrepreneurial culture and business practices. In my book La fabrique communautaire (Rome and Athens: 2016), I suggest “revitalizing” this notion by turning to the comparative analysis of Greek communities in late-18th-to-early-19th Venice, Livorno and Marseilles. Comparison, I argue, is not only an effective way of challenging the methodological “monadism” of the monographic approach: it allows for taking seriously the very idea of a diasporic space which is both plural and coherent.
