Testing Aegean Storage Strategies and Practices from Pots to Walls in Minoan and Mycenaean Contexts

Santo Privitera – University of Athens
Giorgia Baldacci – Universita Ca’ Foscari Venezia
Laetitia Phialon – EFA

This presentation attempts a comparative examination of the Aegean Bronze Age storage structures and containers used for food products. Examples ranging from Protopalatial Minoan Crete to Palatial Mycenaean Greece will be discussed by researchers working in Phaistos and Ayia Triada as well as in Central Greece. The evidence from these Minoan sites is particularly rich and intriguing, since it encompasses both monumental storage facilities, such as the so-called kouloures and storerooms, and clay containers of various capacity and space. When contrasted with the documentation of Mainland Greece, they enable one to highlight both traditional features and technological innovations and eventually to set new major questions concerning the role played by the accumulation of large quantities of staples in both palatial and non palatial contexts.
