The Argive Heraion has long served as a paradigmatic case study of the relationship between the archaic polis and its territory. This talk considers the problem from a new angle: how was sacred wealth managed at the archaic Heraion, and what can these practices tell us about the problem of sacred and public wealth in the archaic period? I re-examine the early-fifth-century dedications by the sanctuary’s iaromnamones to suggest that they were not expressions of corporate achievement or devotion so much as a form of accountability and record-keeping at a regionally-important sanctuary. I will conclude by considering where else this phenomenon may appear in the archaic period and its potential applicability in later Greek history.
