Pottery from Everyday Life in an Athenian Excavation: Termini ante quos from Contexts of the 19th Century in the Athenian Kerameikos

During its long history, the Athenian Kerameikos experienced phases of intensive activities and of abandonment. Production of pottery in this area covers many centuries, including the Byzantine period.
From 1863, when the first excavation was conducted around the classical ‘street of the tombs’, until the late 20th century, the digging trenches and also other cavities occurring during the excavations were filled in again after the works with the earth that had been dug up and remained heaped up next to the excavation. This provided the chance to dump debris, consisting mostly of ‘insignificant’ fragments of ancient pottery, along with more recent material (waste) that had been in use by workmen and archaeologists of the time: Mostly plain household wares of everyday use within the excavation.
Since excavation records in many cases allow for a date of these activities, we are able to use the material from these fillings in order to help date plain pottery and porcelain from the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Usually these contexts provide good termini ante quos. In the lecture, several case studies for pottery from these contexts will be presented.
